Betting Lines for Colts vs. Patriots

Scott Morris | January 16, 2015

The big question on many bettors’ minds over the AFC Championship Game on Sunday is if the fourth time is the charm.

The Indianapolis Colts on the season are 13-5 SU and 12-5-1 ATS and visit the New England Patriots 13-4 SU and 9-8 ATS with the winner moving on to Super XLIX.

Andrew Luck the star quarterback for the Colts is a dismal 0-3 SU as well as ATS in his short career versus the Patriots. New England has won the three games by a combined 144-66 score, with the average margin of victory being 26 points.

The line on Sunday’s game has New England favored by 6.5 points with the point total sitting on 54.

Even though Indy has a poor record of late against New England, the Colts have earned some respect from the bettors after manhandling Denver last weekend.

New England opened -7.5, but Indianapolis bettors have bet it down by one point to its current -6.5

In Week 11, New England routed Indianapolis 42-20. During the postseason last year, the Patriots won easily 43-22 over the Colts. Back in November of 2012, New England trounced Indianapolis 59-24.

In the three straight losses, the common denominator in all three was the poor play of Luck. He completed just 53% of his passes with 6 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.

Many therefore wonder why the spread is just 6.5 points. The common denominator is once against Mr. Luck. The Colts QB has carved up the defenses of the Cincinnati Bengals and Broncos to the tune of 680 yards without any costly mistakes. He has 1,703 passing yards in his first five postseason games, which is the most in NFL history.

Add to that, the improving defense for the Colts, which has given up just a combined 23 points in two games during the postseason thus far and held the Broncos to 115 yards below their average.

However, Tom Brady cannot be overlooked. This is Brady’s ninth AFC Conference Championship Game. He has 19 playoff wins which is more than any NFL quarterback in history.

Last week he ran for one touchdown and threw for three in a comeback win versus Baltimore. Brady’s arsenal includes All Pro Rob Gronkowski at tight end and wide outs Brandon LaFell and Julian Edelman.
